Michelle G. Kessler - Fine Artist

My artistic approach is to create emotion through art. I try to find the spirit of my subject, and through the use of line and color, bring that subject to life. Whether using watercolors, pastels, or oils, I allow the feeling of the subject matter to engulf and guide me to the final image. This process often becomes a battle between the subject and me until the painting is a collaboration of the literal image and my expression of the subject matter.
I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in art history from the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth which was followed by a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems at University of Massachusetts - Boston. After a successful career in business, I returned to my artist roots and purchased the Young Rembrandts franchise in Vermont, bringing after school art enrichment to elementary school age children. For 7 years, I ran the business while following my passion for creating art.
Early in my career, I painted primarily in watercolor and studied shodo and e-tagami in Japan. I later moved on to pastels preferring the medium which enabled bold opaque colors for expressive portraits. Pastels also provided the texture and raw color blending that I was not able to accomplish using watercolors. After several years, I began experimenting with oils and fell in love with the medium’s versatility and the freedom from the constraints of glass as required when framing pastel and watercolor artworks.
Today, I live in Stowe, Vermont and paint primarily in oils and pastels heavily influenced by the expressionist painters that came before me.
